24HCD09

The International 24 Hour Comics Day challenge happened on October 3. I made the first 13 pages but couldn't make it to 24 that day due to lots of happenings (2 guests, 1 outing, 1 shopping trip). I continued until the last page reeeally slowly and was determined to finish it up on Oct 24: The International Climate Action Day!

These pages were all made spontaneously, without prior sketches and/or storyboards, so please apologize any misspelling of names and/or organizations, and if the story is a bit jumbled and not well-structured.

[24HCD 2008] See Tita's and Motulz' stories here!

This year, I'm participating from home. This year, I've succeeded to drag Motulz into this fun mess. This year, you can view our drawings here. Pidi and Thoriq, are you joining us? ;)

Motulz' drawings are up first, because he starts way earlier than me. Enjoy.

Again: 24 Hour Comics Day

The International 24 Hour Comics Day 2008 falls on October 18th, which is tomorrow. Bandung has two venues hosting this event, but I'm going to do mine at home. Scanning and uploading every time I produce a new page.

Why? Because:
I will start early in the morning (06:00) so I can finish also at 06:00 the next day. That 'next day' (Oct 19th) is Lindri's 5th birthday so I'd rather have my morning spent on our birthday ritual: blowing candles on a cake for breakfast, then unwrapping presents!

I planned to go visit those venues during the day. But I abort the plan. Simply because it is a waste of time, waiting for and sitting in angkots to go to those places. I would go out, though, to buy Lindri's birthday cake and that's it. I'll most probably also post entries (aside from pages) during the day.

What else shall I say. Please forgive if I don't quickly respond to your SMS or GTalk or YM etc. tomorrow. And for participants all over the world: wish you a fun comics marathon! :)

**edit to add**
Watch this space because I will upload updates not only from my drawings but also the ones from Motulz! He'll start at midnight tonight, six hours earlier than my starting hour.

[klipping] Transition

Posting di milis Komik Indonesia: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/komik_indonesia/message/10941
dari Suryo

rekan kita, Tita Larasati, kembali merilis karyanya.

Kita, para penggemar komik Indonesia, patut berbangga bhw
dua orang komikus Indonesia terpilih menjadi Best 10 Comics, diantara 1.200 komikus sedunia.

[klipping] Komik Kelar 24 Jam

An article at today's Pikiran Rakyat about the 24 Hour Comics Day in Bandung. My name is mentioned, but (as usual) is followed by inaccurate information.

http://www.pikiran-rakyat.com/cetak/2007/102007/25/kampus/lain01.htm

Komik Kelar 24 Jam

SABTU (20/10), pukul 10.00 WIB, tanpa bunyi lonceng, dentuman meriam atau tembakan pistol, sekitar 30-an orang mulai mengeluarkan pensil, laptop, cat air, sampai makanan kecil.

Komiknya tahun lalu berjudul Transition.

Antologi 24 Hours Comics Days sebenarnya sebuah antitesa.

Bagaimana pelaksanaannya tahun depan?
Year's 24 Hour Comics Day.

Cuplikannya: I had indeed scheduled it during Ramadan — which did not prevent the first 24HCD involvement of a predominantly Muslim nation, and some very lovely comics came out of Indonesia on that day.

The US is trickling on board:
It’s good to see pages from various sites coming online. I was just looking at the Space59 (Indonesia) pages, some lovely stuff, and was happy to find a batch of pages from Tita Larasati in there (she had a great story in the 2006 Highlights book.)
He he.

Oke, selamat bersiap-siap untuk tahun depan!

Komik DHANUdanPIDI

Dhanu came to the 24HCD venue in Bandung, at SPACE59 and spent some minutes drawing along with everybody who aimed to finish 24 pages within 24 hours (the finish line was the next day, at 10am). He gave his drawings to Pidi, who indeed requested the drawings.
Pidi came back to the location at around 08.30 in the morning, picked up Dhanu's drawings while saying that he, too, would answer the challenge with Dhanu's drawings - for he still had time, a couple of hours until the deadline. He said he had been thinking about the script the whole night before and he knew what to do for the comics. He cut up the drawings into pieces and stuck them to new pages, making a story.. about an unwanted superhero. Enjoy.

Another 24 pages within 24 hours

Saturday, 20 October 2007

06:00 Waking up after an uncomfortable sleep (Lindri moved into our bed at about 04:00am, followed by Dhanu not long afterwards; leaving me balancing myself at a small edge of the bed until I really woke up)

07:00 Had breakfast

08:00 Preparing to go: checking books, papers, pens, cables and MacBook - all in my black Nomad backpack

08:15 Leaving for SPACE59. Thoriq called on the way, saying he's participating, too. Great! I won't be the oldest one in the room :)

08:45 Arrived at SPACE59, preparing some stuff. The place was fully prepared: desks and seats, carpets, a couple of computers - each with a scanner, Wi Fi facility, water dispenser, plastic cups and tea and coffee.

09:30 People started to trickle in.

10:00 Start the 24 Hour Comics challenge! I knew I worked slower compared to last year, for now I have lots of peers to chat with. Not that I mind, hehe..

11:00 Iput came and was tempted to join, too - and she did. That made 38 people in total from all of us. She sat on the same carpet with me and Thoriq. Snacks were already available. Extra tables and folding chairs were arranged outside for smokers.

12:30 I was at page 6, drawing food all over out of hunger. I scavenged for heavier snacks (thanks to Thoriq for the bacang!). Drawing and chatting proceeded simultaneously.

17:00 Iput prepared to go home and continued working at home until morning. Sybrand, Dhanu and Lindri came to visit and to pick me up. Dhanu ended up drawing insects for Pidi; Lindri drew while sitting on my back (I was laying on my tummy), Sybrand went around to take pictures.

18:00 We went home to have dinner. Dhanu likes his fish very much, but Lindri shook her head after a few bites and left to the living room. She fell asleep not long afterwards, in front of the television. Dhanu resumed playing with his LEGO helicopter until bed time.

19:00 I've got time to draw and upload one page before leaving for SPACE59 again.

20:30 Out of the house, this time also bringing a sleeping bag and two 'pillows' (they look more like dolls)

21:00 Arrived at SPACE59 again. Continued drawing and chatting and being sleepy.

23:00 Seemed like Pidi has gone home (he said he was just going out for food).

Sunday, 21 October 2007

00:30 The spot lights at the ceiling blew off - they couldn't stand their own heat.

04:22 Finished the last page. Sent a message for the blog. Waited for a free scanner, then tried to scan and upload (succeeded, after some trials).

05:00 Tried blogging this minutiae while teasing Thoriq who still had 500 more pages to ink.

The sun has come out again. I'm glad I could finish 24 pages within 24 hours but I'm not to confident with the result - perhaps the wrapping of the story is a bit weak, or I've lost my spontanity at some points. I was distracted a lot too, not only by chatting and snacking, but also by the Internet (this is not a complaint).

All in all, it was quite pleasant. Especially because I had the chance to see how it went in Bandung (as opposed to in Amsterdam), how these young people behaved (rather sweet, actually) and what came out (mostly brilliant drawings!).

I wonder how our colleagues in Jakarta and Semarang are doing (there was only one update from Jakarta at the 24HCD blog). Look here http://space59bandung.multiply.com/ for the drawings and photos of participants at SPACE59, here http://esduren.multiply.com/photos/album/91 for my drawings and some photos, and please click the tag 24hcd (underneath this post) if you'd like to see the result from last year as well.

Cool Packages

The last couple of days brought me packages with cool contents. The first one was a copy of 24 Hour Comics Day 2006 Amsterdam, a compilation of 24HCD works that was done at Lambiek Comics shops/gallery, Amsterdam. I took part in the event and got my story published already in the Highlights 2006, but nonetheless this book is something else. It is different when you actually know and work with fellow artists in person (although partly), and saw the process along the way. Thanks, guys, for sending me a complimentary copy!

Another one arrived earlier today: two sets of T-shirts (each accompanied by two stickers), one red and one white, with the following text:

TRAVEL WARNING:
INDONESIA
DANGEROUSLY BEAUTIFUL

More about this campaign can be viewed at the Multiply site of Indonesia Bertindak. It only took about two, three days from ordering to receiving the shirts. I have seen this campaign through photographs I received in PPI Amsterdam mailing list (Indonesian students wearing the T-shirts in front of the Peace Court of Den Haag), then forgot about it for a while. Until about one week ago, I saw a red sticker sporting the same graphics on a dashboard of an angkot in Bandung(!). That same week, Jalansutra mailing list started a competition to make a slogan for Indonesian tourism. All members are welcome to submit one or more slogans, each with a short description of its origin. It didn't take long until we heard from the creator of Dangerously Beautiful who submitted this widely-known slogan (at least among Indonesian students abroad). This is where I knew how to contact them. Thanks a lot, people, for the prompt response. And high appreciation for your efforts and spirit!

The headline of Indonesia Bergerak is a quotation from W.S. Rendra: TINDAKAN adalah aktualisasi dari kata-kata. If I may add to that, I'll quote from Leonardo Da Vinci (which is one of ten propositions in my dissertation): I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.

***For those who are interested to take part in the campaign by purchasing the T-shirt, please send an SMS to this number: (+62) 0888 - 8  - 17 - 1945 or send an email to iwan_esjepe@yahoo.co.id***

[24HCD] The Highlights are Here!

It was Thursday evening when I found a letter from the post office, asking me to pick up a package at their office in Soekarno-Hatta. That's quite far from where we live, so I wondered if it worthed my while to go there. The sender column said About Comics, USA. Ooh my 24HCD Highlights 2006 copies have arrived! Then I would go willingly to the post office at the soonest possible time, eventhough the post office charged extra for custom and repackaging (which mounted up to 94.000 IDR). Friday was a national holiday, offices were closed. Saturday morning, I waited until Syb came back from cycling, then departed to Soekarno-Hatta.

It was already late morning when I left and the post office closes at 13.00 on Saturdays. I decided to take a taxi, but everything was in a jam anyway, which is normal for a long weekend. I eventually arrived at the post office at about 12.00, looked for the package-pick-up section, paid and left. I took an angkot homewards (no problem: there was no time restriction and there's one that goes directly to Kanayakan - Dago, our nearest stop home).

Since it's a long way home, I got all the time in the world to unpack the package. For seven books (contributors of full comics receive 7 books each), the package felt light. I untied the sealed rope and pried open the Indonesian Postal Service plastic bag. The original package from USA (brown paper envelope on bubble-wrap plastic sheet) was already torn a bit at the corners, but no matter. I could easily rip a corner and pull one book out. Reading time! (Take my words: reading in angkot is not easy, but possible).

The texture of the paper is similar to those of newspaper, brownish, but thicker. The printing quality is average, or quite good compared to ours here in Indonesia. The contents are of course the most interesting factor of this book. 24HCD Highlights 2006 compiles a variety of how stories can be told through images - all done within the 24-hour deadline on October 7th, 2006. Next to the 10 full stories that got chosen, the Highlights also includes a number of excerpts that are thought to be representing the heterogeneity of submitted works during the 24HCD event.

For my story (pages 53-76), the editor wrote as an intro:

2006 was the first year that Indonesia had 24 Hour Comics Day event sites, but the country burst on the scene with 3 event sites hosting more than 75 participants... and Indonesian Tita Larasati (esduren.multiply.com) wasn't at any of them. She drew her story at the Lambiek comicstore in Amsterdam, which will make sense once you read her autobiographical tale.

After my pages come Alam's (another Indonesian), with the following intro:

Not all Indonesian participants were in The Netherlands, of course. Alam Muammar crafted "Ciuman Pangeran Bukan Untuk Permaisuri" at the Pengajian Komik DKV Community event, hosted at Institut Teknologi Bandung, West Java. (Alam's English translation was added for this book.)

(One of Alam's colourful pages is used as the back cover of this book.)

It is perhaps interesting for fellow Indonesian participants and organizers to read a remark about them at the introduction:

The 24 Hour Comics Day 2006 was amazing
... You can see it in the blogs and the videos that  people made of the event, you can see it in how the town of Muhos in Northern Finland let students out early so they could participate, or how the Muslims in Indonesia kept energy up through the event despite it falling during the fasting month of Ramadhan, or how new comics creation communities have once again formed in the wake of the event.

Am I excited? Of course! I've been waiting for this publication with high enthusiasm, and now it's finally in my hands! Now if only I find a way to get this other one sent to me.. :)

The next 24 Hour Comics Day falls on October 20th, 2007. Any of you who want to participate (either again or for the first time), please prepare your gears and let's arrange another comics fever!

Early Birthday Treats (Comics Publications)

Here's some cheering up for myself towards the end of the year, when my nerves should be stressed by all the business of dissertation completion, packing and moving overseas and emigration documents: my drawings got published in three books!

40075km Comics
I got directed by Joost Pollmann's Blog to the 40075km-comics site, where everyone was invited to upload his/her graphic works (comics, illustration and all visuals) on the site - as long as it has the theme "travelling". Well, my (earlier) diary is mostly about travels, so I could upload some of my travelling episodes there. This site is managed by Employe Du Moi (in English: Do It Yourself), a group of young comics/visual artists in Belgium.
After one year of online publication (and a couple of exhibitions in Brussels), the 40075km Comics organizer decided to pulbish an anthology of selected works. Two of my entries were chosen: my Finland trip and my football comics (a nomination in Goethe Institute Jkt comics competition).

An excerpt from an email I received from the organizer of how to get the book:
40075km comics, 597 pages in color for 29,50 euros. It will be available in Belgium in December and in January in France and Switzerland.
1. Come to l'employé du Moi, 51 rue de l'Insstruction, 1070 Brussels, please ring before you come +32 3453076
2. Wait for the public event that we will organize in Brussels in December (we don't know where and when yet)
3. Come and see us in Angoulême (France) in January 2007, please place your order by sending an email so we know how many books we'll have to bring with us.

24 Hour Comics Day at Lambiek
As some of you've already known, I participated in the 24 Hour Comics Day event last October, joining the others at Lambiek. Lambiek is going to publish all participants' works - except the ones made by Cutie guys (the works of the Cutie group will be published by Bries - a small publisher in Antwerp, Belgium).

24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2006
This morning I received the news that my 24HCD story got selected for the Highlights 2006! What a surprise! This year they only chose 10 works (instead of the usual 24) out of hundreds of entries. I'm so flattered by the appreciation :D
"The book is listed in the new issue of Previews hitting comics shops this Wednesday (page 208), and will ship in March." - an email excerpt from Nat Gertler, founder/organizer of 24 Hour Comics Day and editor of 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2006

These news are surely cool birthday presents for me! And thanks to you all family and friends who have been encouraging me!

Reminiscing the 24 Hours Marathon

10:30
So, last Saturday, Oct. 7th, was the 24 Hour Comics Day of 2006. In the morning I quickly did a grocery shopping, before I left to Lambiek at about 10:30. Getting there, I saw that all the provided tables were almost full already, so there was not much choice for me. I picked one at the far end of the whole group, which, honestly, was a bit of a relief because I hardly knew anyone in person. Next to me (there was only one other table at my side) sat Matt Baay, who is known for his bunbuns series. I settled myself at the table and wandered around the shop before the event began.

11:00
Approaching 11:00 there was a small opening speech from Klaas and Bas, caretakers of Lambiek, then the event started. We rightaway scribbled, bending our torsos towards the surface of our tables. I didn’t get the chance to notice the others for I was concentrating on finishing my pages (I was determined to finish several pages ahead of time, because I knew I would take a long break within this 24 hours). After some minutes of industrious silence, the air started to be filled with ‘conversations’ again (Anyone has a Typex? Anyone has a glue? Oh $#!*& eraser, the ink isn’t dry yet! Gimme back my Typex!).

13:00
I did the first pages for about half-an-hour each, so by lunchtime I’ve already finished 6 pages (I noted down the finishing time at each page, next to the page number). Lunch was two pieces of boterhamen which I ate while drawing, served by a nice girl who brought drinks and food around the room the whole day. Peter Giljam and Luc and Luc’s friend came in the afternoon. Maaike Hartjes dropped by as well, and we had a chat partly about her experience in the ASEF program in Singapore (interesting!).

15:00
Later, around 15:00, Syb and the kids came as well (too bad he just missed Peter). Dhanu was, as usual, browsing for stuff he likes (this time, a complete Simpsons family figurines), while Lindri didn’t want to go anywhere but staying with me. I quickly finished another page then carried Lindri, bringing her around the room, so I could also see how the others were doing.

In the office of Lambiek, three people were busy scanning and uploading updates (freshly-finished pages) to the Internet. I was assisted by Nick, who has been working for Lambiek for years, to whom I opened my Multiply access so he could add the drawings in my album. Syb and the kids left at about 16:00, Peter dropped by again later (so he just missed Syb), and I tried to finish the 11th page at around 17:00. I gave those pages to Nick to be scanned and started packing up to go home. I had to prepare dinner and (later) put the kids to bed with the hope that I could come again after they’re asleep. When I left, people at Lambiek were busy crating in warm dinner as well (from Food Fantasies), which smelled reeeaaally good (I’m sorry I missed it).

17:00
I took my bike and headed home, dropping by Dirk to buy Syb’s coffee (standing in line with Saturday shoppers is, believe me, hell on earth). I’ve told Syb to make rice so that’s ready, I only had to fry the Catalanseworst (spicy sausage) and the mix Mexican veggies (beans, sweet corn kernels, onions, and such) to accompany the dish. Dhanu was playing with his favourite Lego game on the Internet, Lindri was just done watching Wallace & Gromit on DVD. Dinner was ready on time, then, while waiting for the kids’ bedtime, I browsed the Internet to find out how my comrades in Indonesia were doing. I dropped a line in their pages before continuing with household works (dishes and stuff).

20:00
Bedtime for our kids. I brought Lindri to her rituals: brushing teeth, then reading her a story (she wants me to read Nelson nowadays; she finds it really funny) before turning the light off and leaving her alone. However, she seemed restless that night (our guess: it's her teething period again). She didn’t go to sleep rightaway but letting out occassional weeping.

20:30
I continued drawing in the front room, while Syb went to console Lindri once in a while.
I was planning to come back to Lambiek but I didn’t have the heart to leave the already-tired Syb minding the cranky-Lindri by himself; not to mention the coughing-Dhanu, too. So I stayed at home while drawing and scanning and uploading my drawings (I managed to make page 12 to 21). Syb of course couldn’t sleep with the noises I made, so he moved to the back room to accompany Lindri. I worked until about 04:00 (page 21 was marked 03:42), then went to bed.

04:00 – 07:00
Sleep.

08:00
Sunday Oct 8th. As usual, the kids were awake early (around 07:00 already). I woke up and prepared breakfast for everyone before continuing my drawings. I drew and scanned and uploaded again until I was ready with my whole 24 pages. In between, I opened up my chatting line and also checked updates from the 24 Hour Comics Day center. Finally, I’m done! The last page was marked 09:56. After uploading the last page, I got ready to go to Lambiek for the finale..

10:30
I arrived at about 10:30, some artists were still drawing, some went home already. I thanked Nick for his assistance in scanning and uploading the first half of my comics, then picked up my originals (page 11 has liquid stains on it!). I found out that a couple of television people were documenting the event last night and continued in the morning. I was also told that someone made drawings of all participants to be published at Cutie. He waited for me but I didn’t come back that night, so he had to proceed and left as soon as he’s done. Ah well, by now I realize I can’t get everything I want.

11:00
Everyone should stop drawing! We all made it! I hung around for awhile at Lambiek for breakfast: (hard balls of bread filled with either mozarella-tomat-pesto or creamy tuna salad, pretzels, olives, salami, ham, cheese, fruit shakes, juice, coffee – and also accompanied by champagne!) while browsing the pages of the participating artists. The television people made recordings of the results, spreading them on the table. I overheard that they will broadcast this 24 Hour Comics Day documentation this Thursday (Oct 12th). I’m looking forward to watching the program – not because I’m going to see me or my works being broadcasted (because there isn’t any) – but to see the atmosphere during the event, for I couldn’t observe it myself during the marathon.

11:45
I went back home and caught up with sleep in the afternoon (a bit too long that it caused a mild case of headache). Well, I guess I’ve had enough distraction from my work. But I’m glad I participated, not only because it’s fun, but I could finally free my mind from the thoughts about my transitions during my life in The Netherlands. I was, in short, relieved.

The photo was taken from Lambiek website.
I'm at the far back in checked (red & black) shirt.

24 Hour Comics Day 2006

The 24 Hour Comics Day this year falls on Oct 7th. I was doubting about joining it or not (I even put up a poll at dearinter.net for this.. haha), since I know how busy I am (see my diary about 24 Hour Comics Day from last year here). But I thought it will be my last comics-thing in Holland before I leave for good, and why not have a (great) distraction from my routines once in a while! So people, watch this space next week, when the event starts. I hope I can update my drawings each hour on that day (by the way, I will drop by Lambiek to join the rest, of course, but not to stay a full 24 hours).

24-hours comic day

I and Lindri visited Lambiek at around 13:00. The artists at work were not easy to observe (they sat in a 'circle') and I wouldn't want to bother them. So I didn't stay long and left to enjoy the nice weather. I continued following the 24-hours comic day of Lambiek through the Internet, from home (they uploaded one page every hour)

April 23rd, 2005 was the 24 hours comic day, all over the world. Lambiek, my trustworthy comic shop/gallery in Amsterdam took part in this event as well, performing seven Dutch comic artists (you can see their profiles and works through Lambiek's 24-hours site). They started at 11:00 on Saturday (April 23rd) and should finish at 11:00 on Sunday (April 24th), producing 1 page each hour. Here are my self note on those days.
